Heritage Strategic Stone Study
After many successful regional meetings to discuss the feasibility of a project to gather and publish existing information on English building stones and the buildings, villages, and other structures in which they have been used, the Strategic Stone Study is now fully underway. This information is required to ensure suitable materials are used for building repair and conservation. This need is particularly acute for vernacular buildings. Although previous investigations indicated that a large amount of information exists, it is often unpublished or not easily accessible but, using many of these documents, the study is gradually building up a database of building stones, representative buildings and villages, and their historic sources. The intention is to make the results available in two forms. Firstly, a freely accessible, searchable database via the web; this innovative website has been trialed with the initial batch of counties’ information. It is the first attempt at producing a GIS web based database of this kind and is expected to go live later this year. Secondly, the production of a series of Atlases of English Building Stones which will eventually be available to view or download in pdf format on the MineralsUK website. In support of this study, the British Geological Survey have been commissioned to integrate into their Britpits database, all the quarry locations shown on Ordnance Survey maps since the first edition and the quarry data in the series Mineral Statistics of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, 1853 onwards.
