•British Geological Survey (BGS) collection at Keyworth, Nottingham
A collection of large-size, representative hand samples of building stones from current and historic quarries in the UK, together with specimens from historic buildings supplied by conservation architects and contractors, currently c.680 samples. The coverage extends across the whole of the UK and supplements material in the Keyworth BGS Britrocks collection. The data includes quarry and building locations and lithostratigraphic information.
The BMNH Building and Decorative Stones Collection totals approximately 10,000 specimens and is one of the largest documented collections in the UK. Its strength and importance lie in the wide variety of UK and European rocks, the sources of which are no longer obtainable. The collection of UK stones is being moved to BGS Keyworth on long term loan early in 2010.
